Week 4
Growing Up
“God wants us to grow up, to know the whole truth and tell it in love—like Christ in everything.” Ephesians 4:15 MSG
As a teen, I couldn’t wait to grow up and go to college. Growing up and growing older seem like such easy things to do when you’re young. Ask any child and they’ll tell you they want to “get big,” “grow up,” and “be older.”
However, as we grow into adulthood, we find that growing and changing can sometimes create uncertainty and hurt. It can be challenging to take on a new job assignment, to move away from everything that is familiar, to start a family, or to face an empty nest.
Often during these life changes we need to rediscover ourselves and our abilities of handling new and different responsibilities. Here are some tips for handling it all:
- Go with God—don’t try living life without Him. “He will never leave you or forsake you,” no matter what happens (Deut. 31:8).
- Make a plan. Break down the latest challenge into steps rather than trying to tackle the whole thing. Similar to that riddle, “How do you eat an elephant?” … One bite at a time.
- Get enough sleep. Change can be exhausting, so allow yourself the needed time to rest.
- Keep something that’s familiar—a routine, a comfy bathrobe, dear friends (even if now they are long distance), or favorite foods.
Growing up and changing can be a challenge, but they can also be the fulfillment of God’s plan for you… and the adventure of a lifetime!
Lord, help me to handle the challenges of growing up and changing. Be near me and guide me into Your great plan for my life. Amen.
