“but Jesus said to them, ‘I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?’”

– John 10:32 (NIV)

Daily Meditation: John 10, Matthew 18:15-22

There is a time and a place for everything, and sometimes it’s time to stand up for the truth! That’s when I draw a line in the sand, the point where I simply must stand up and tell it like it is. My kids and husband know that point well.

I’m sure you’ve been there too. While I do make it my goal to “speak the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15), I also admire how Jesus stood up to his attackers (they wanted to stone him) and said, “I have shown you many good works… for which of these do you stone me?”

He called their cards. He did so in love, but he didn’t shy away from the conflict. This was a defining moment, and he was going to make them choose, based on fact, what they were going to do. He didn’t stand by and ignore the fact that they were wrong; he confronted them with the truth in a righteous and loving manner.

You and I probably aren’t about to be stoned, but other kinds of attacks are common in our day. We may be victims of bullying, blackmail, backstabbing, gossiping, and even violence, but there is a time and a place to call their cards. When it’s your time, tell it like it is! Don’t be afraid. You are in charge. Tell the truth. Speak up for what is right, whether for you or for others.

“Stand before the people you fear and speak your mind – even if your voice shakes.”

– Maggie Kuhn

Be fearless: Calling someone’s cards is not an everyday event. It’s hard to do because you need to be prayerful and listen for God’s direction. And it can be intimidating! But you owe it to others, yourself, and the person who is wrong to let the truth ring out.
