“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear…”
– 1 John 4:18 (NIV)
Daily Meditation: Isaiah 35:4, 2 Timothy 1:7
One of the hallmarks of a healthy relationship is safety. Without a feeling of safety, you can’t fully place your trust in a person, because there’s always a fear that they will betray it. If you feel unsafe, can you really trust that person with your heart? And when you don’t have a sense of security, you can often feel overwhelmed or be driven by fear. We may even experience this fear with God.
Fears have a way of seeping into our minds, blowing in like unseen drafts of air on a cold wintery morning: we don’t know where they come from, but we can feel the chill. In my ongoing search for wisdom and growth, I have re-read that verse about “perfect love drives out fear” again and again and again. I have heard it a hundred times, but every time I read it I feel a warm breeze blowing on my soul, a comforting presence in my heart. Jesus is the embodiment of perfect love; he casts out my fear!
How sure am I that my Father in heaven loves me? Well, when I am fully confident of his love for me, right at that precise moment fear fades. It is as if the fireplace in my soul turns on. You know the warmth I’m talking about. You’ve felt it before. It goes way beyond your cold feet, all the way down into the inner reaches of your soul, and it feels so good. That is our Father! To walk freely, boldly, and fearlessly is to be a daughter holding her Father’s hand.
“Fear lurks in the shadows of every area of life. The future may look very threatening.
Jesus says, “Stop being afraid. Trust me!”
– Charles Swindoll
Fears always seem to come with claws that grip us and hold us tight. That sensation is not of God! His love can “declaw” our fears, and living fearlessly is the result. Now go, and may you forever feel his warm breath upon you.
