“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” – Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
Daily Meditation: 1 Samuel 3, 1 Kings 19:11-13
Have you ever found yourself in a conversation that feels more like a monologue? It can be frustrating to try to have a “conversation” when the other person won’t let you get a word in edgewise! Or perhaps you are the one doing all the talking while the other person is just nodding along.
Too often, our conversations with God fall into this latter category. It is wonderful to talk to God, but I have found something even better than talking to God. It is hearing Him speak to me! We miss so much when we only talk with God, because we are the ones doing all the talking without truly taking time to listen to what God wants to say to us. Why is it so important to listen to God? Because “the word of God is alive and active.” It is sharp, it cuts through every issue, and it brings us incredible clarity and life. It is unstoppable! We pray for answers, but often we don’t stop to truly listen for God to speak into our lives. Quite frankly, I want the power of God’s word working in my life. We all do, which means we need to make it a daily habit to listen. By His Spirit, God speaks through Scriptures, thoughts, words, friends, and neighbors. We can certainly talk to God too, but let’s make it more of a dialogue than a monologue.
Let Him speak to you through His Word, through other people, through promptings of the Spirit. He wants to speak to us, but we must be listening. Speak, Lord, your servant hears—but the question is… are we listening?
“Our failure to hear His voice when we want to is due to the fact that we do not in general want to hear it, that we want it only when we think we need it.” – Dallas Willard
Be fearless: I love that God is not silent. He speaks, and every word brings me life. I want to turn my ear to hear even more! Let’s focus today on truly listening. Speak Lord! Your servant listens
