“God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind.

Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?”

– Numbers 23:19 (NIV)

Daily Meditation: Numbers 23, John 8:21-30

I’ve discovered that some of those speedy oil-change shops offer special deals on certain days. And while I do appreciate the opportunity to save money, sometimes I’ve asked myself, “Can I really trust them with my car?” I usually decide that I probably can; it is, after all, just oil, and it’s just my car. Sure, I want it done right, and although I might do an online rating check, I am not going to do a background check on each of their mechanics.

On the other hand, if I were interviewing a potential babysitter or personal trainer for my kids, then I’d certainly want to know more about the person. They may offer three references, but I’ll be looking for ten! That’s because feeling safe is essential in any healthy relationship, and trustworthiness must be proven. When it’s someone or something we really care about, we want to be sure that we can trust the person.

It would be nice to be able to place absolute trust in people, but the reality is that, as humans, we will ultimately fail each other, disappoint one another, and at times, even demonstrate that we are untrustworthy. But imagine if you met someone who never lied or changed their mind, never failed to act, and always did what they promised, without exception. That person would have earned your trust, and then some! Those characteristics define our Father in heaven. How could you not trust someone like that?

“When we trust God more than our feelings, it confuses the devil.

I mean, when he throws you his best shot and he can’t budge you from believing God,

he won’t know what to do with you anymore.”

– Joyce Meyer

Be fearless: Make the choice to trust him. That’s a great place to start. Trust has a way of growing when we water it.
